Clearance Clothing from all Periods
Due to the relatively small amount of people involved in reenacting the 1812 era, there are many items that are just not available and the development of new items is somewhat lacking. These needs must be made up by the ingenuity and imagination of the hobbyists.
Military personae to be recreated are US Regular Infantry, Regular Artillery, Regular Rifle Regiments, Eastern Military Uniform, and Frontier Militia in local costume. A typical American force consisted of a corp of Regulars and a mass of Militia. Good Militia impressions, therefore, are very necessary. Even the Frontier Militia was issued very many military items.
The typical Regular of the War of 1812 might look as follows:
Uniform Coatee, white linen shirt, black neck stock, straight bottom trousers, half gaitors, low quarter shoes, shako, cartridge box with white buff sling, white buff baldric for bayonet scabbard, haversack, knapsack, tin canteen.
Legging bottom trousers, fatigue jackets, Rev War period knapsacks and wooden canteens have been noted as being used exclusively. Winfild Scotts whole Brigade in Canada was clothed in fatigue jackets and trousers for battle.
