#900      Confederate Sack Coat
This is a loose fitting jacket that extends halfway down the thigh. The Southern product was often lined (ours is furnished unlined) and generally had one or more pockets on the outside (ours has one outside lower left pocket, specify if you wish to add another). Fronts had various numbers of buttons, four, six, and seven being the most common. (Ours has seven unless you request otherwise.) Today, we fail to appreciate the great quantity of these garments that were actually used during the mid and late war period. Some serious inspection of photographs taken of Confederate troops in service, especially the casualties, will reveal a surprising number of sack coats in use. (Buttons are included in jacket price)

#902RP      Columbus Depot Shell Jacket
Carolyn Jarnagin has done thorough research on this particular jacket. She visited the Kentucky Military History Museum at Frankfort to personally handle originals in their collection. She made sketches, took many measurements for preciseness and took photographs to document our pattern. We have also taken much information from research done by Leslie D. Jensen. This jacket it thought to have seen widespread use during the War.
The Columbus Depot is a waist length jacket with a six piece body. (There is one example of a Columbus Depot Shell with a pointed back. Specify) It has a full one piece sleeve tapering to the cuff. The cuff is also trimmed in solid French blue and is straight all the way around approximately 2 3/4" wide. This jacket is made of jean cloth and is fully lined with cotton osnaburg (you may request that we line the body and sleeves with a plaid or print cotton). The collar is trimmed in solid French blue and is approximately 1 1/4" tall square cut. The bottom front edge is rounded. The Columbus Depot examples found in the Kentucky Military History Museum are made of Gray Jean wool faded to a light brown color and trimmed with French Blue collar and cuffs. The number of buttons varies. The Columbus Depot original examples have five, six and seven button fronts. Specify. Earlier coat examples have two inside horizontal breast pockets; however, later examples show one exterior pocket on the upper left breast. Our jacket is Gray Jean with French Blue collar and cuff with a six button front, with interior pockets only, unless otherwise specified.
